The E-Glo SB – B stands for Balanced

The E-Glo F B marked a significant milestone as the first model in EAT s innovative new line of phono stages, achieving the rare distinction of being an alltube, fully balanced design. An absolute novelty in today s market of phono-preamps.

Now, nearly a year later, the lineage continues with the arrival of the E-Glo CB and E-Glo SB, two inspired offshoots that extend the core of F B s design philosophy to new and more accessible price points. These models embody EAT s commitment to making true high-end, tube-based balanced phono stages attainable to a broader community of analog high-end enthusiasts.

The E-Glo SB shares many high-end components and uses a higher selection of polypropylene film capacitors in gain and RIAA stages than the E-Glo CB. These capacitors, renowned for their exceptional electrical stability, exhibit negligible temperature and frequency dependence and possess an ultra-low dissipation factor, ensuring signal integrity of the highest order. As a result just, the E-Glo S B delivers even more of the effortless musicality, tonal richness, and dynamic expressiveness than the E-Glo C B could deliver.

The E-Glo SB uses an improved tube topology compared to the CB. The second amplifier stage is now a fully tube based design. And still – this is very important – employs a fully balanced gain stage design. By keeping the first stage fully balanced we can retain the benefits of fully balanced connection and extract the final musical information out of the ± signals and subtract, remove, all noise that could potentially be added along the transmission. Symmetrical, or also called balanced, transmissions consist of a hot and a cold (also called + and -) signal. Both signal chains effectively carry the same musical information. As there are two separate signal chains, we also needed two individual amplifier sections.

Connect your turntable to the XLR input and profit of the balanced signal path. MC cartridges or balanced MM cartridges* are a necessity for fully balanced operation, and the new XLR inputs enable you to reach new levels of pristine phono amplification without any added interference and unprecedented low noise floor. (Please note: typical MM cartridges are not compatible with balanced phono stages as they will exhibit increased noise in the right audio channel due to the grounding of the internal cartridge generator. Modified, special balanced versions of MM cartridges are available and only those MM cartridges should be used with the balanced inputs of the E-Glo F B. Of course, any type of MM cartridge (balanced and unbalanced) can be used on the regular single-ended RCA inputs. Please consult your dealer or E.A.T. representative for further information.)

Improved Tube Topology

The first stage, the aforementioned balanced gain stage, consists of three discrete semiconductor operational amplifiers. After treating the balanced signals symmetrically, they are added back together and processed by the first of the two discrete RIAA equalisation stages. By keeping the gain sta- ge fully symmetrical the signal to noise ratios are optimized, giving the EQ section the best source to work its magic on.

The second stage is now a fully tube based design, composed of the two ECC83S and two E88CC triodes. Compared to the E-Glo C B, there is no tran- sistor in use anymore. This stage includes the second RIAA EQ and a switchable subsonic-filter.

The output stage is made up of a dual discrete semiconductor operational amplifier that converts the unbalanced signal to a balanced one and en- sures a low output impedance of the preamplifier. Low DC offset at the outputs is maintained by dedicated DC servo circuits.

Discrete Circuitry

The E-Glo S B uses fully discrete audio circuitry throughout its complete design. A discrete circuit is composed of electronic components which are disparate, individual devices, also called discrete components.

Countless hours of listening tests and years of experience have shown us that even the very best IC (integrated chip) Op-Amps do not tend to be so neutral, natural, dynamic or vivid. Standard phono pre-amplifiers with integrated circuits have a few tens or hundreds of components, but discrete de- signs will employ hundreds or thousands of components by comparison.

External Power Supply

The E-Glo S B is powered from an external advanced power supply. It is important to keep all the parts which can radiate electromagnetic fields out of the amplifier range. This is the reason why an outboard power supply is used. Due to legal requirements, this power supply must be a switch mode type with guaranteed stand-by mode power consumption <0,5W.

An outboard power supply with linear construction is even better, because it can offer much cleaner power. When you want to manufacture such clean and really high-end power supplies, you have to use a transformer with a very low core saturation and preferably with shielding between primary and secondary windings.

EAT LPS 2 – elegant linear power supply Upgrade

Low core saturation decreases radiation of the outer electromagnetic field which can be inducted into sensitive circuitry. Shielding between windings work as a very efficient filter which effectively suppresses interference from mains. When it is combined with a DC-blocker which avoids the saturati- on of a core by DC current, the resulting filtration is even better. The mechanical vibration of the transformer is also reduced. It is critical that the transformer in use is also vacuum impregnated.

Obviously, such a transformer becomes larger than one would expect. Also, much more expensive. That is why such a power supply requires a second cabinet, in the same size of the E-Glo S B itself. The location of the power supply shouldn t be close to it and additionally, the E-Glo S B shouldn t be exposed to big transformers in power amplifiers or other appliances which can cause electromagnetic interference either. Strong electromagnetic fields from big transformers in very close proximity can even penetrate the heavy metal/aluminium chassis of the E-Glo S B. Even a chassis like this has its limits! The best arrangement is to keep the E-Glo S B as far away as possible from those harmful electromagnetic fields.

The EAT LPS 2 represents another big step up for your E-Glo S B phono performance and brings it yet another step closer to the E-Glo F B, that is by default shipped with its own LPS power supply.

Not only does the EAT LPS 2 power your EAT phono stage, it also features a second power output for clean and stable power to EAT turntables.

Cartride Loading Options

Two turntables can be connected at the same time & easily set-up on the top panel. Each input settings are stored in the memory.

Large ranges from 40dB up to 70dB are possible. A fully balanced design makes all the difference here, handling amplification levels this high. The E-Glo SB can be perfectly matched with a wide variety of cartridges and perfectly integrated into any Hifi system, matching the volume levels accura- tely to other sources like CD players or streaming devices. The RCA and XLR outputs can be used at the same time for extra flexibility when connecting multiple audio systems.

Two load impedance ranges – high and low – are available. When switched to "low", standard MC options can be accessed and, in a bit of an unusual manner, the E-Glo SB even provides a "high" setting. That way, even the load impedance for MM cartridges can be fine tuned, not forcing you to stick with the typical 47k Ohms setting that is usually found elsewhere.

The handsomely styled E-Glo SB is housed in a full aluminium chassis, its valves peering through with new selectable valve illumination. Across the front section are rows of switches for instant access to all settings no need to get inside to set the E-Glo SB for your cartridge of choice. NEW optionally available mangetic side panels, available in real wood makasser or piano black, offer additional style for your E-Glo SB.
